How to block Instagram Reels without deleting Instagram
Instagram doesn't let you switch Reels off, and its time reminders only remind. On Android, an app like Cool Snail (free) takes you out of full-screen Reels about a second after you open them, while DMs, stories, your feed, search and posting keep working. Reels a friend sends you in a chat still play.
Why deleting Instagram isn't the answer
Most people don't want to quit Instagram. They want their messages, their friends' stories and the occasional post, without falling into an hour of Reels. Deleting the app throws all of that away, and it usually comes back within a week.
Your options, honestly
| Option | What it does | What it doesn't |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram's time reminders | Tell you how long you've been on | Don't stop anything; you can dismiss them |
| The Following feed | Shows posts from people you follow | The Reels tab is still one tap away |
| Digital Wellbeing app timer | Pauses Instagram after a set time | Pauses DMs and stories too |
| Cool Snail | Takes you out of full-screen Reels, and checks in after 3 Reels in your feed | Android only |
How to block Reels with Cool Snail
- Install Cool Snail from Google Play. Free, no trial, no account, Android 8.0 or later.
- Turn on its Accessibility access. That's how it can tell a Reel from a message. It's used only inside the social apps Cool Snail supports, and what it sees stays on your phone.
- Open Reels to check. After a second you're back on your feed, with a small "I'm watching you" note.
- Optional: limits. Give Instagram its own daily minutes, add a total for all apps, and set open hours, for example 08:00 to 23:00.
What keeps working
- DMs, stories, your feed, search, posting and your profile.
- A Reel a friend sends you: opened straight from a chat on WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Signal or Instagram's own DMs, it plays, with a "Sent by a friend. Go ahead." note. Swiping to someone else's reel ends the pass.
- Reels mixed into your feed: after 3 in a row, Cool Snail asks if you want to keep going.
Limits you should know
Cool Snail recognises Reels by how Instagram is built. A big Instagram redesign can stop it until Cool Snail is updated. It's Android only for now. The bubble that shows your time and posts seen floats over the feed, so you always know where you are.
Questions
Can I turn off Reels in Instagram's settings?
No. Instagram has no switch for Reels. Its time reminders only tell you how long you've been on, and the Following feed hides suggestions but not the Reels tab.
Will I still get DMs and see stories?
Yes. Cool Snail only reacts to full-screen Reels. DMs, stories, your feed, search and posting work as usual.
What about Reels my friends send me?
They play when you open them straight from a chat on WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Signal or Instagram's DMs. Swiping on to a reel from someone else ends the pass.
Keep Instagram, lose the Reels hole. Cool Snail is free on Android.
